நேர் கூற்று
ஒருவர் பேசியதை அவர் நேராக பேசியவாறு மேற்கோள் குறிகளுடன் எழுதுவது Direct Speech ஆகும்.

அயற் கூற்று
ஒருவர் பேசிய பேச்சை நேர்முகமாக கூறாமல் அந்த செய்தியே வாக்கிய நிலையில் அமைத்து கூறுவதற்கு indirect Speech ஆகும்.

A. Statement - சாதாரண வாக்கியம்
➤ Ajith Kumar said to Vijay, " This is a textbook." - direct speech➢ அஜித் குமார் விஜய்யிடம், "இது ஒரு பாடநூல்" என்றார். - நேர் கூற்று
➤ Ajith Kumar told Vijay that was a textbook." - indirect speech
➢ அஜித் குமார் அது ஒரு பாடப்புத்தகம் என்று விஜய்யிடம் கூறினார். " - அயற் கூற்று
B. Question (Interrogative) - வினா வாக்கியம்
➤ Dinesh asked, "are you tried ?" - direct speech➢ தினேஷ், "நீங்கள் முயற்சித்தீர்களா?" - நேர் கூற்று
➤ Dinesh asked whether you was tried. - indirect speech
➢ நீங்கள் முயற்சி செய்தீர்களா என்று தினேஷ் கேட்டார். - அயற் கூற்று

D. Exclamation - வியப்பு வாக்கியம்
வியப்பு வாக்கியங்கள் செய்தி வாங்கியம் போலவே பெரும்பாலும் அயற்கூற்றில் மாற்றப்படும் போது வாக்கியத்தின் பொருளை பொறுத்து said, remarked, pitied, exclaimed, praised என்ற சொற்க்களை சேர்த்து that என்ற இணைப்புச் சொற்க்களை சேர்த்து பயன்படுத்தும் போது very என்ற சொல்லை சேர்க்க வேண்டும்.
